By Xorkpe Sosu 7 Min Read

Manchester United defeated Everton in a thrilling 3-1 victory to advance to the round of 32, marking their seventh straight victory on the whole.

Everton and Frank Lampard were under a significant amount of pressure going into the game after a 4-1 hammering by Brighton on Tuesday put them in the Premier League relegation zone.

This was a considerably better performance, and United’s 3-1 victory was only secured by a Marcus Rashford penalty in stoppage time.

Marcus Rashford was the star once more thanks to two outstanding assists and a superb penalty in stoppage time.

He is performing admirably, and his level of assurance is unfathomable compared to where he was at this time last year.

Reactions from Ten Hag and Frank Lampard after United’s 3-1 victory over Everton

In a highly open game, Everton made a lot of contributions and had a second equalizer ruled out for a Spandex-tight offside.

It wasn’t the kind of performance that ought to result in a manager being fired, but these days you never know.

Here are some key comments from both bosses after the the game at Old Trafford

Frank Lampard’s verdict after the game when asked if He deserve better?

“I think so. The players were very, very good in the sense of the organisation, the gameplan, the work ethic, the togetherness – things that should be basics in football, but people question them when you have a performance and result like we did the other night.”

“We were really good. I’d need to analyse the game but we had the better chances I think.”

“Marcus Rashford was probably the difference between the teams; top individual talent can do that to you.”

Was asked if his performance enhanced his chances of keeping the job?

“I don’t want to go on about that. I only want to talk about the players and how well they played.”

“I’m not concerned; my focus is on this team and getting a result against Southampton.”

“When the players perform with the spirit of an Everton player, like they did tonight, the fans will react [positively] to that, even in defeat.”

Marcus Rashford’s comments after the game

“This is probably up there with the best goalscoring form I’ve had in my career. I feel good on the pitch.”

“I’m getting in positions and areas to score goals, and if we keep creating chances I feel at the minute I’ll keep scoring.” “We want be in finals and we want to win trophies. Hopefully we’ll get the chance to do that.”

Let’s take a look at Ten Hag’s comprehensive analysis of the win

“It was really competitive, both teams challenged each other, it was a good tempo.”

“I think the audience is the big winner of this cup game. It was exciting to watch.”

“I think it was also justified. I think their (Everton’s) performance was really good. They played really brave, on the front foot, go forward, and that is why I think the audience got the perfect game.”

“It was a good show. It was entertaining. And once again we are happy we won, but I think the performance from Everton was good as well.”

On Antony’s Goal

“I think it was a great goal, but of course great action from Marcus Rashford on the left side, we don’t often reward the movement from players.”

“Also with Anthony Martial today, a lot of good movements, he makes space for other players on the pitch and that was also [the case] with the movement of Antony. With the first goal he was in the right spot, but it was great movement to be there.”

On Rashford goal scoring abilities

“It is himself [the reason why he is flourishing this season]. He has the skills, I am supporting him, I am motivating him, that is clear.”

“I think I put him on the right position on the pitch, but to be fair he can play across the whole front line and in some cases behind. We can use him also as a tactical weapon, and he is scoring from every position.”

“If he keeps this focus, I am convinced he will score even more goals. If he keeps investing in training, investing in the games, I’m sure – I’m convinced – he can keep the goals coming in this run.”

On Substitute involvement

“It’s not all the time the same substitutes we bring in, or the same starting XI, but what I really like in this moment is that we are working as a squad, not only as a team.”

“All the players are ready to play, they are prepared to come on the pitch to help out, or they score goals, but also to help out in the midfield and defending, to defend when we are up – luckily we are not often down to react to that – but also you see that the players are ready to come on and to help out; fighting, supporting with conviction to get the best result and that process I am really happy [with].”
