Robert Carradine dies at 71

Robert Carradine, the veteran film and television actor whose career spanned more than five decades and multiple generations of viewers, has died at the age of 71, according to his management company.

In a statement shared with Deadline, Carradine’s family confirmed his passing and reflected on both his personal warmth and long struggle with mental illness.

“It is with profound sadness that we must share that our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother Robert Carradine has passed away.”

The family described Carradine as a constant source of light to those around him, adding: “In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon on light to everyone around him. We are bereft at the loss of this beautiful soul and want to acknowledge Bobby’s valiant struggle against his nearly two-decade battle with Bipolar Disorder.”

They said they hoped his story would encourage broader conversations about mental health, stating: “We hope his journey can shine a light and encourage addressing the stigma that attaches to mental illness.”

Born on March 24, 1954, Carradine came from one of Hollywood’s most prominent acting families. He was the youngest son of late actor John Carradine and the brother of actors David Carradine and Keith Carradine, as well as Christopher Carradine, a former vice president of Walt Disney Imagineering.

Speaking to Deadline, Keith Carradine said the family made a deliberate decision to be open about his brother’s mental health challenges.

“We want people to know it, and there is no shame in it.” He added, “It is an illness that got the best of him, and I want to celebrate him for his struggle with it, and celebrate his beautiful soul. He was profoundly gifted, and we will miss him every day.”

Carradine made his film debut in the 1972 Western The Cowboys, starring alongside John Wayne and Roscoe Lee Browne. He went on to build a steady and respected career across studio films, independent projects, and television.

His most iconic role came in 1984, when he played Lewis Skolnick, the earnest leader of a fraternity of outsiders, in Revenge of the Nerds. The film became a cultural touchstone and launched multiple sequels, cementing Carradine’s place in pop culture.

Nearly two decades later, he reached a new audience as Sam McGuire, the father of the title character, on Disney’s hit series Lizzie McGuire.
