Rock and roll has lost one of its most soulful voices. Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, the celebrated Grateful Dead vocalist and former backup singer for Elvis Presley and Percy Sledge, has died at the age of 78.

According to a family statement, Godchaux-MacKay passed away peacefully on Sunday at Alive Hospice in Nashville after a prolonged battle with cancer.

The statement read, “She was a sweet and warmly beautiful spirit, and all those who knew her are united in loss. The family requests privacy at this time of grieving. In the words of Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, ‘May the four winds blow her safely home’.”

Fans quickly took to social media to honor her memory, describing her as a “timeless voice” and “an irreplaceable part of rock history.”

Born in Florence, Alabama, Godchaux-MacKay began her music career in the famed Muscle Shoals scene before moving to California in 1970.

There, she met and married pianist Keith Godchaux, joining Grateful Dead shortly after. Her soulful harmonies became a defining element of the band’s sound during the 1970s.

Tragedy struck in 1980 when her husband Keith died in an accident. Godchaux-MacKay took a break from performing before returning to music with renewed passion, recording with Ghosts and The Heart of Gold Band.

In later years, she married bassist David MacKay, returned to her hometown of Florence, and continued recording music in Muscle Shoals studios — the same place her career first took flight.

Her death marks the end of an era for fans of classic rock and the Grateful Dead community, who continue to celebrate her legacy through her timeless recordings and stage performances.
