FIFA president Gianni Infantino has hinted at the possibility of Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo making an appearance at this summer’s revamped Club World Cup.
Though Ronaldo’s current club, Al-Nassr, did not qualify for the tournament, Infantino’s comments have sparked fresh excitement among fans and clubs alike.
During a recent interview with popular YouTuber and streamer IShowSpeed, Infantino spoke about the much-anticipated tournament, which will take place in the United States. He praised the involvement of global superstars like Lionel Messi, who is set to play in the opening match on June 14 for his MLS side, Inter Miami.
Adding to the speculation, Infantino suggested that Ronaldo could still find his way into the tournament, despite Al-Nassr missing out. He hinted that discussions are underway with other clubs who might be interested in signing the 40-year-old forward, whose contract with Al-Nassr expires on June 30.
“There are discussions with some clubs,” Infantino said. “So if any club is watching and is interested in hiring Ronaldo for the Club World Cup… who knows, who knows.”
Ronaldo’s future has been a major topic in football circles ever since he moved to the Saudi Pro League in 2022 following his dramatic departure from Manchester United. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has remained in top form, and his experience would be a major asset to any team participating in the competition.
The format of this year’s Club World Cup is significantly different from previous editions. For the first time, the event will include 32 teams rather than the traditional eight, and it will take place in the summer. This change creates new options for player transfers and club plans.
To meet these modifications, FIFA introduced an additional transfer window from June 1 to June 10. This gives clubs the freedom to complete signings before the tournament begins, paving the path for high-profile transactions like a possible short-term agreement with Ronaldo.
At 40, Ronaldo remains one of the most followed and marketable athletes in the world. His potential participation in the Club World Cup could draw massive global attention and possibly serve as one of his final appearances in a major international competition.
