Ronaldo Drops Out of CBF Presidency Race After Lack of Support

Brazilian football legend Ronaldo de Lima has announced that he is withdrawing his candidacy for the presidency of the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF).

The 48-year-old, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, had intended to challenge incumbent president Ednaldo Rodrigues in the 2026 election.

Just three months after declaring his intention to run, Ronaldo shared his decision to step back on social media.

In his statement, he expressed frustration with the lack of support from the federations that make up the CBF, revealing that 23 of the 27 federations refused to engage with him.

According to Ronaldo, these federations were not interested in hearing his ideas or presidential pitch, which focused on giving more voice and space to clubs in the decision-making process.

“I found 23 doors closed,” Ronaldo wrote, explaining that the federations were satisfied with the current administration and supported Rodrigues’ re-election bid.

There was no openness to dialogue. I was unable to present my project, share my ideas, and hear them as I would have liked.”

Despite his withdrawal, Ronaldo emphasized the importance of dialogue, transparency, and unity for the future of Brazilian football.

“If the majority with the power to make decisions believes that Brazilian football is in good hands, my opinion matters little,” he added.

Ronaldo’s footballing career, which includes two World Cup victories with Brazil, remains legendary, and his involvement in football management continues with his 51% controlling stake in La Liga side Real Valladolid.
