Sadio Mané Announces Retirement From Senegal National Team

Sadio Mané has announced his retirement from international football, ending a remarkable career with the Senegal national team after more than 130 appearances and a record 54 international goals.

The decision was confirmed on Friday in a statement published by Le Quotidien. The announcement came only days after Senegal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended with a 3-2 extra-time defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32.

In a farewell message, the 34-year-old reflected on his years representing his country and thanked supporters who stood by him throughout his international journey.

“Know that I sacrificed everything for this flag. I gave my all and always fought fiercely for our country.” Mané also credited Senegal’s fans for helping shape his career. “Your constant support has been the driving force behind my success.”

Although his playing days with the national team have come to an end, Mané said he still wants to contribute to Senegalese football. He expressed a willingness to serve in coaching, technical, or administrative roles if given the opportunity.

“Tomorrow, I will gladly put my experience at the service of the Nation, whether within a technical staff, on the coaching bench, or in the governing bodies.”

Mané made his senior debut for Senegal on May 25, 2012. Over the next decade, he became one of the country’s greatest footballers, collecting more than 130 caps while scoring 54 goals—the highest total in Senegal’s history.

His international career included appearances at three FIFA World Cups: Russia 2018, Qatar 2022, and the 2026 tournament in North America.

He also played a defining role in Senegal’s greatest football achievement by helping the Lions of Teranga win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, the country’s first continental title. Mané sealed that historic victory by converting the winning penalty against Egypt in the final.
