Sir Dave Brailsford to Step Back from Manchester United Role as INEOS Launches Major Restructure

Sir Dave Brailsford is poised to reduce his involvement at Manchester United amid a significant restructuring effort led by INEOS chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

As reported by The Times, Brailsford will transition back to his position as Director of Sport for INEOS, marking a shift in responsibilities away from Old Trafford. This development forms part of a broader internal shake-up at the club, orchestrated by Ratcliffe following his minority stake acquisition.

The 61-year-old, renowned for pioneering the ‘marginal gains’ philosophy in cycling, had previously stepped down from his role as team principal of the INEOS Grenadiers cycling team to support the football club’s strategic overhaul.

This leadership adjustment coincides with a fresh wave of job cuts at Manchester United. Staff have reportedly begun receiving redundancy notices as part of a continued effort to streamline operations.

Just days after Ruben Amorim’s side lost the Europa League final to Tottenham in Bilbao, INEOS commenced its latest phase of cost-cutting reforms under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s direction.

Approximately 200 employees have been identified as at risk, with notifications being issued throughout the week.

Chief Executive Omar Berrada previously informed staff in February that further layoffs were expected under a broader “transformation plan” designed to steer the club back to “profitability”. This follows the elimination of 250 positions last year.

The urgency behind these measures appears to be fueled by the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, a costly miss that deprived Manchester United of a potential £100 million windfall.
