American rapper Snoop Dogg, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., has successfully petitioned to have his 1993 murder charge sealed, nearly 30 years after he was acquitted of the crime.
The decision was confirmed in late February 2024, following Snoop’s request to a Los Angeles court in January.
The charge stemmed from an incident in August 1993 when Snoop and his bodyguard, McKinley Lee, were accused of the fatal shooting of gang member Philip Woldemariam at Woodbine Park.
The pair faced first and second-degree murder charges during a highly publicized trial that took place in 1996.
Ultimately, they were acquitted, with jurors also clearing them of conspiracy to commit assault related to Woldemariam’s death.

At the time of the trial, Snoop had just released his debut album, which contributed to his rising fame.
Following his acquittal, he became a staple in the music industry, known for hits like “Drop It Like It’s Hot.”
The rapper expressed relief after the verdict, stating to the LA Times, “They made the right decision. This has been an ordeal that has affected our lives for the past 2 1/2 years.”
By sealing the murder charge, Snoop Dogg ensures that this part of his past will no longer appear in background checks related to employment, housing, or education.
This legal move allows the 52-year-old rapper to continue focusing on his career and personal life without the shadow of past allegations.
In addition to his successful music career, Snoop is a father to four children from two relationships, including his long-time marriage to Shante Broadus.
The sealing of the charge marks a significant moment for the rapper, who has navigated a complicated history with grace and resilience.
