Zahara had a huge fan base across Africa

Bulelwa Mkutukana, better known by her stage name Zahara, was an award-winning Afro-pop singer from South Africa. Her minister of culture made the announcement today.

According to Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa, the family had been receiving government assistance “for some time” while she was in the hospital, allegedly due to liver complications.

2011 saw the singer become well-known thanks to her widely acclaimed album Loliwe in Africa. She spoke candidly about her struggle with alcoholism in 2019.

The musician’s family announced last month that she had been admitted to the hospital and urged South Africans to pray for her.

At the age of 36, she passed away in a Johannesburg hospital on Monday night, according to the state-run SABC news website.

After her death at the age of 36, fans have been mourning and reminiscing on social media. In a statement posted on Zahara’s Instagram account, her family said: “She was a pure light, and an even purer heart, in this world. A beacon of hope, a gift, and a blessing to us and countless people around the world.”

Mr. Kodwa wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that “Zahara and her guitar made an incredible and lasting impact in South African music.”

One X user wrote, “She left us with such beautiful music.”

Zahara, who put out five albums, took home numerous national and international honors. She was listed as one of the BBC’s 100 Women in 2020.

The songwriter also used her platform to speak out about violence against women in South Africa, something she revealed had happened to her.

In an interview with a local radio last year, Zahara said her music was not for recognition but to bring comfort to broken souls that need healing.
