A disturbing criminal investigation is unfolding in South Carolina after authorities uncovered the remains of an elderly man hidden inside a large industrial barrel on his own property, leading to the arrest of his son.
Law enforcement officials in Darlington County confirmed that 82-year-old Judson Hawkins Jr. had been dead for several months before deputies made the grim discovery at his residence in Hartsville on March 18. The remains were reportedly found inside a 55-gallon drum, intensifying concerns about the circumstances surrounding his death.
The case quickly shifted from a missing persons inquiry into a serious criminal matter.
Investigators allege that Hawkins’ son, Judson Hawkins III, attempted to mislead authorities during the early stages of the investigation.
According to official reports cited by WBTW, he is accused of providing false information that hindered efforts to locate his father.
Further details outlined in an arrest warrant indicate that Hawkins III also moved his father’s body from inside the home to another location on the same property. This action, reported by WPDE, has led to additional charges tied to the unlawful handling of human remains.
Despite the shocking nature of the discovery, investigators say the exact cause and manner of Hawkins Jr.’s death remain undetermined. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether foul play directly contributed to his death, leaving key questions unanswered as the forensic investigation continues.
Hawkins III now faces multiple charges, including obstruction of justice and the destruction or removal of human remains. During a court appearance on Friday, a judge denied him bond, meaning he will remain in custody as the case progresses. He is expected to return to court in early June for further proceedings.
The case has drawn attention across the region, highlighting both the complexity of death investigations and the legal consequences tied to interfering with law enforcement inquiries
