Senegalese professional footballer who plays as a winger for Premier League club Liverpool Sadio Mane to have a stadium named after him in his home country, Senegal.

The 29-year-old soccer player is being hailed as the hero in the just ended AFCON 2021 in Cameroon after scoring the penalty against Egypt in the final of the Nations Cup to hand his country, Senegal their first ever AFCON title.

Sadio Mane after his spectacular performances in the tournament and also netting the decisive penalty leading to Senegal beating Egypt 4-2, Mane will have a stadium in the country to be named after him to celebrate his contribution.

According to Goal, the Mayor of the Senegalese region of Sedhiou, Abdoulaye Diop, has confirmed plans to name the city’s new stadium after Liverpool star Sadio Mane as a reward for his performances at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

“Sadio Mané has honoured Senegal, the region of Sédhiou and the whole of Casamance. I would like, through this decision to give the name of Sadio Mané to the Stadium of Sédhiou, to express the recognition of all the worthy sons of the region, towards a man who makes known to the whole humanity, Bambali and its chief town of region, Sédhiou. Sadio Mané richly deserves this gift,” Abdoulaye Diop said.

Sédhiou is a town of Senegal, in the Casamance area, nearby the Casamance river, with a population of 24,213 in 2013. It is the capital of the Sédhiou Region.

Sadio Mane played in all of the Teranga Lions’ games in Cameroon and he contributed three goals with two assists.

Upon their triumphant return following their AFCON win, Aliou Cisse’s men however hosted by the president of the Republic of Senegal, Macky Sall, on Tuesday in the Presidential where the players were honoured.

President Sall conferred the country’s highest order upon each player which makes them Grand Officers of the National Order of the Lion.

In addition to the honour, each of the players and members of the coaching crew received a bonus of 50 million franc CFA ($87,412) and a 200 square metre plot of land in the nation’s capital, Dakar.
