In a statement shared via his Truth Social account, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump responded to the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision to uphold a law banning TikTok in the United States.
The ruling came on January 17, 2025, with the court citing national security concerns due to the popular app’s ownership by the Chinese company ByteDance.
The Supreme Court’s decision requires TikTok to either sell its operations in the U.S. to an American company or face an outright ban.
While many anticipated the ruling, Trump emphasized that he respects the court’s decision but will need time to assess how best to move forward. “I’ll be making the decision soon,” Trump commented, speaking to CNN.
Although the ruling paves the way for the ban to take effect by January 19, 2025, the day before Trump’s inauguration, the president-elect indicated he would explore all possible options to protect TikTok’s future in the U.S.
“Congress has given me the decision, and I intend to evaluate it fully before acting,” he said.

He also urged the court to consider temporarily halting enforcement of the ban, allowing him time to negotiate a possible sale of the platform.
The idea of banning TikTok was first introduced during Trump’s earlier presidency, when he raised concerns over the platform’s data collection practices and its potential use by the Chinese government.
The Supreme Court ruling referenced these concerns, emphasizing the risks associated with TikTok’s operations under ByteDance.
Trump’s shift in stance toward TikTok, now expressing a desire to preserve its operations, marks a significant reversal from his earlier approach.
