A 39-year-old Tennessee woman is facing an attempted first-degree murder charge after police say she deliberately struck her ex-boyfriend with her SUV and ran him over multiple times as he tried to escape in a Memphis neighborhood.
According to police, the incident happened around 11:30 a.m. Saturday on the 500 block of Gilleas Road. Authorities allege that Tanieka Ray used her SUV to hit her former boyfriend, who later slipped and fell in a neighbor’s yard after the initial impact.
Investigators say a nearby resident heard a disturbance outside his home and looked out to see Ray in the street, repeatedly making U-turns while yelling at a man who was on the ground. The neighbor told police he heard Ray shouting that “she was going to run him over again and was going to kill him.”
The victim later told officers that Ray struck him with the vehicle and then ran him over three to four times after he fell while attempting to get away. The neighbor said Ray sped off after the attack and crashed into a utility pole a few houses away.
Following the crash, police say Ray exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. She was later located in south Memphis at a residence on the 700 block of East Davant Avenue. The neighbor subsequently identified Ray in a six-person lineup, according to authorities.
The injured man was found propped against a fence before being brought onto the neighbor’s porch, where police later arrived. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
According to WREG, the victim suffered multiple broken bones and several dislocated body parts, injuries that required surgery.
Ray was taken into custody and remained jailed over the weekend on the attempted first-degree murder charge as the investigation continues.
