At least seven people lost their lives in a devastating accident on Sapelo Island, Georgia, when a ferry dock collapsed during a fall celebration for the Gullah-Geechee community.
The incident occurred as over 40 people were on the dock, leading to a plunge into the water.
Eight individuals were hospitalized, with six reported in critical condition.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, along with the Coast Guard and local fire departments, launched a search operation using helicopters and boats equipped with sonar technology.

Among the deceased was a chaplain for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Authorities are investigating what they described as a “catastrophic failure” of the dock’s aluminum gangway, which was installed in 2021.
“There was no collision,” explained Tyler Jones from the Department of Natural Resources. “The gangway just collapsed, and we are still trying to determine why.”
Governor Brian Kemp expressed his heartbreak over the tragedy, urging Georgians to pray for the victims and their families.
President Joe Biden also extended condolences, noting that what was meant to be a joyful celebration turned into a scene of devastation.
The Gullah-Geechee community, known for its rich cultural heritage, was celebrating its annual Cultural Day event when the incident occurred.
Hogg Hummock, where many community members live, has deep historical ties, being founded by descendants of enslaved individuals.
This tragedy has heightened concerns for the island’s residents, who have faced challenges regarding land preservation and zoning laws in recent years.
Local leaders emphasized the tight-knit nature of the community, stating that this loss is felt by all.
