U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has nominated John Ratcliffe, a former ally and director of national intelligence (DNI), to serve as the next director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
If confirmed, Ratcliffe would make history as the first person ever to hold both of the nation’s highest intelligence positions.
In a statement announcing the appointment, Trump expressed confidence in Ratcliffe’s abilities, calling him a “fearless fighter” who would uphold the constitutional rights of all Americans while ensuring the highest levels of national security.
“I look forward to John being the first person ever to serve in both of our Nation’s highest Intelligence positions,” Trump added, emphasizing his vision of “PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH.”
Ratcliffe, a staunch supporter of Trump, served as DNI from May 2020 to January 2021, overseeing U.S. intelligence during a period marked by international tensions and domestic divisions.

In his previous role, he focused on key national security issues, such as the growing military threat from Iran, North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, and foreign interference in U.S. elections.
His tenure was characterized by firm stances, particularly on China and the Middle East, which may influence his approach if he takes the helm at the CIA.
Since leaving office, Ratcliffe has continued to be a vocal critic of the Biden administration’s foreign policy, particularly its handling of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In a June article, he criticized President Biden’s threat to withhold weapons from Israel, claiming that it undermined a key U.S. ally while emboldening adversaries in the region.
Ratcliffe has also expressed concerns over what he sees as a lack of firmness toward Iran.
As the president-elect prepares for his next term, Ratcliffe’s appointment is part of a broader reshaping of U.S. intelligence and national security leadership.
His potential confirmation as CIA director will likely signal a continued hardline approach to global security challenges.
