President Donald Trump has suggested another America-themed geographic name, posting an image that labels New Mexico as “New America” without announcing any formal plan to rename the state.
The map, shared Sunday on Trump’s Truth Social account, showed the word “Mexico” crossed out on the state and replaced with “America.” The White House later shared the same image on its official X account.
Neither Trump nor the White House said the post was part of an official proposal to change New Mexico’s name.
The post came among 34 messages Trump published in less than an hour Sunday. Other posts included altered images portraying him as wrestler Hulk Hogan and depicting Iran with borders reshaped into an outline resembling Trump’s head, according to the New York Post.
Trump has previously pushed to replace established geographic names with America-themed alternatives.
He ordered the federal government to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” Last month, he also directed the government to use “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario.
New Mexico differs from those geographic features because a president does not have the authority to unilaterally change a state’s name.
The White House has not announced any formal effort to rename New Mexico, leaving Sunday’s post as a suggestion rather than an official name-change process.
