Trump Rules Out Third Term: 'I'll be an eight-year president'
Quick summary
  • President Trump tells Republican senators to end the Senate filibuster immediately.
  • Warns GOP of three years of legislative paralysis if they refuse.
  • Demands rapid passage of voter ID and election security laws.
  • Sparks internal GOP debate ahead of 2026 midterms.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump issued a blunt ultimatum to Republican senators, warning that unless they immediately move to eliminate the Senate filibuster, the GOP risks three years of total legislative gridlock.

Speaking directly to lawmakers, Trump delivered an impassioned message emphasizing the need for swift action on election integrity measures, including voter identification laws and restrictions on mail-in voting.

“START TONIGHT! Pass voter ID, no mail-in voting, all the things, make our elections secure and safe!” the president said in remarks shared online late Wednesday.

Trump accused Senate Republicans of being too hesitant to confront Democrats over procedural barriers, referencing continuing resolutions (CRs) that temporarily fund the government.

“John, they’ve done a [CR] FOREVER. The FIRST time they haven’t. They won’t do a CR? They won’t do ANY BILLS!” he declared.

In a fiery tone, Trump insisted that GOP lawmakers must act decisively to “terminate the filibuster” if they hope to pass meaningful reforms before the next election cycle.

“If you don’t get it, you’ll NEVER pass [voter ID],” he warned. “It’s time for Republicans to do what they have to do: terminate the filibuster. If you don’t? You’ll be in BAD shape. We won’t pass ANY legislation. No legislation for 3 and a quarter years.”

The president’s comments underscore ongoing divisions within the Republican Party over whether to dismantle the 60-vote threshold that has long served as a Senate safeguard for minority rights.

While conservative hardliners argue it obstructs progress on key priorities such as border security, voter ID, and tax reform, moderates caution that removing it could backfire should Democrats regain full control of Congress.
