The Japan Meteorological Agency initially estimated the quake’s magnitude at 6.9 but later revised it to 6.6 after further assessment.

The earthquake occurred at 9:19 p.m., centered at a depth of 36 kilometers (22 miles) in Kyushu, the southwestern main island of Japan. Residents in Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures were urged to evacuate as a precautionary measure.

NHK TV reported that a tsunami wave, estimated at 1 meter (3.2 feet), reached Miyazaki Port within 30 minutes of the quake. However, the waters recorded were only 20 centimeters (0.7 feet) high. Authorities swiftly issued warnings to avoid coastal areas and rivers. The tsunami advisory, which included parts of Kyushu and Shikoku islands, was lifted shortly before midnight.

Despite the quake’s strength, there were no immediate reports of significant damage. A man in Kyushu sustained a minor injury after falling down stairs, according to NHK. Train services in Miyazaki Station were temporarily halted, leaving passengers stranded, but operations resumed shortly after safety checks.

Shigeki Aoki, an official from the meteorological agency, advised residents to stay vigilant for aftershocks and potential landslides over the next few days. Falling objects in homes also pose a risk, he warned.

The earthquake caused tremors across a wide area, but the streets remained well-lit, and electricity services were uninterrupted. Monitoring posts for nearby nuclear plants reported no irregularities, providing reassurance to local residents.

Japan’s location along the “Ring of Fire” makes it highly prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. Monday’s temblor prompted experts to analyze its connection to the Nankai Trough, a region known for periodic major quakes. A devastating 1946 Nankai Trough earthquake claimed over 1,300 lives, while a magnitude 7.1 quake hit the area as recently as August 2023.

For now, no extraordinary measures are being taken, but authorities remain on high alert.
