President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed the idea of a “short truce” with Russia on Friday, saying it would only make matters worse.

Speaking in a remarks broadcast at the Halifax International Security Forum, zelensky said; “Russia is now looking for a short truce, a respite to regain strength. Someone may call this the war’s end, but such a respite will only worsen the situation.”

According to Zelenskyy, Officials in Russia have repeatedly said they were ready to engage in peace talks without any conditions, but it is not clear if they have made a formal ceasefire offer.

“A truly real, long-lasting and honest peace can only be the result of the complete demolition of Russian aggression.” He added.

The White House said earlier in the day that only Zelensky can decide when to open peace talks with Russia, rejecting the notion that it was pressing Kyiv to negotiate an end to the nearly nine-month war sparked by Moscow’s February invasion.

General Mark Milley, the top US military officer, has suggested in recent weeks that Kyiv could use battlefield victories over Moscow’s forces to initiate peace talks.

Milley said on Wednesday that while Ukraine has made significant progress, Moscow still controls roughly 20% of the country and that it is unlikely that Kyiv’s troops will force the Russians to leave anytime soon.

Last week, Ukraine reclaimed control of the strategically important southern city of Kherson. It had been under Russian control since the war began in late February.
