Amorim will probably bring his own staff with him as his formal start date draws near, but Van Nistelrooy is still hoping to keep a spot in the backroom group and contribute his extensive knowledge.

“When United came in with this opportunity, for me, it was a fantastic opportunity. I wanted to be here and I put that [management ambitions] aside. For me, that was a deliberate decision to come here and help out.”

“I just want to stay and do the same thing and, for me, that’s my focus for the moment.” The makeup of Amorim’s backroom setup is yet to be confirmed, with the incoming boss keen to bring some staff with him from Sporting.”

Even though Van Nistelrooy is excited to work with the new head coach and help usher in a new era at the club, his presence provides a familiar, firm hand in these difficult times for United.

“I look forward to getting to know him better. Obviously he’s done very well in Portugal. He’s very young, a talented coach and did well for a long time over a longer spell in Portugal.”

“We’re early in (the season) and I think performances with the spirit that the players showed on Wednesday and today is a foundation to build on,” Van Nistelrooy said about the teams performance since it lowest points tally after 10 matches since 1986-87.

“With this spirit and fight then football qualities will come out and will be shown.”

“That’s, I think, the foundation to build on, and then there’s time to improve a lot on the ranking.”

Van Nistelrooy, on the other hand, is obviously eager to stay at Old Trafford, and United defender Diogo Dalot has stated that the players also want him to stay. Dalot said, “I think he has that quality,” to Sky Sports.
