Video: EC apologises for the delay in announcing result, explains what caused it

Mrs Jean Mensa, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has apologised to the public for the delay in announcing the outcome of the 2020 General election.

EC who promised to make available the outcome of the 2020 Ghana Elections 24 hours after the polls which were supposed to be 5 pm yesterday, Tuesday, December 8, has failed to fulfil that promise.

Her failure to announce the result in the given timeframe has caused a lot of stir nationwide as people are finding their own interpretations to what they think is going on with the board trusted to serve them with the accurate figures.

The Chairperson of the EC, Mrs Jean Mensa in a press briefing on Wednesday dawn, December 9, 2020 at around 12:30 am asked that calm remains as she apologizes and gives reasons as to what actually caused the delay.

According to her, Commission is still receiving results, and as it stands now the Commission has received fourteen (14) results from the Regional Collation Centres with two outstanding.

And out of the received fourteen (14) results from the Regional Collation, as at 7 am, Wednesday morning the commission has been able to certify seven (7) results and made it public for each and everyone to see as they work on verifying the remaining seven (7) results, and keep us up to speed when they receive the outstanding two which is not yet in.

ELECTORAL COMMISSION URGES GENERAL PUBLIC TO REMAIN CALM AS IT PREPARES TO DECLARE 2020
PRESIDENTIAL RESULTS

This comes to inform the General Public that the Commission is still receiving results from the Regional Collation Centres. Currently, the Commission has received fourteen (14) results from the Regional Collation Centres with two outstanding. The Commission is working with Agents of Political Parties at the National Collation Centre at the Head Office of the Commission. The Agents are reviewing all results, prior to certification by the Chairperson of the Commission, who is the Returning Officer for the Presidential Election.

The Commission urges the General Public to remain calm. The Commission intends to post all certified presidential results on its website.

The Commission apologizes for its inability to declare the Presidential Results at 5:00pm as planned. We however wish to assure the Public that the process of collating results has been transparent, fair and participatory. It has involved Political Party Agents at all levels: at the Polling Station. Constituency Collation Centre’s. Regional Collation Centre’s and the National Collation Centre.

At the time of issuing this release, two representatives each of the Political Parties, including representatives of the NDC are at the Commission, working with the Commission’s staff at the National Collation Centre. The process is going on well.

We wish to assure the public, that contrary to speculations being put out by sections of the public, the process has been seamless and collaborative.

The Commission will declare the election as soon as it receives results from the remaining two Regional Collation Centres.

Meanwhile the Commission has released results for seven (7) regions on its social media platforms.
