Aaron Ramsey has announced his immediate retirement from professional football at the age of 35, closing the chapter on a career that shaped modern Welsh football and delivered major silverware at club level.

The former Wales captain exits the game after a period without a club, following his departure from Pumas UNAM last year. Attention now shifts to his next move, with coaching understood to be his likely path.

Ramsey leaves behind a legacy that places him among Wales’ most influential players. Across 86 international appearances, he scored 21 goals and featured in three major tournaments. His impact was most visible during UEFA Euro 2016, where he helped drive Wales to a historic semi-final finish and earned a place in the tournament’s official team.

He remained central to the national side in subsequent years, appearing at UEFA Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup—the latter marking Wales’ first appearance on football’s biggest stage in 64 years.

At club level, Ramsey’s rise began with Cardiff City before a high-profile move to Arsenal in 2008. During an 11-year spell in North London, he became a key figure in the team’s midfield and played a decisive role in three FA Cup triumphs. Notably, he scored the winning goals in two finals, cementing his reputation as a player for big moments.

His career later took him across Europe, including stints with Juventus and OGC Nice, as well as a loan spell at Rangers. At Rangers, he helped the club reach the 2022 Europa League final, though he missed a penalty in the decisive shootout.

Ramsey also returned to Cardiff for a second spell, where he briefly stepped into a leadership role as interim head coach toward the end of last season—an early glimpse into his future beyond playing.

His final move came in Mexico with Pumas, where he aimed to maintain fitness in hopes of representing Wales again on the international stage. However, after struggling to secure a new club, Ramsey chose to step away from the game.

In a heartfelt message shared online, he reflected on his journey and expressed gratitude to those who shaped his career.

“This has not been an easy decision to make. After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football,” he wrote.

“Firstly, I want to start with Wales. It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments in it. It would not have been possible without the incredible input of all the managers I have played under and all the staff who have helped me in many ways.

“To the Red Wall. You have been there through thick and thin! You have been there through the highs and lows, and you have been an essential and indispensable part of our success. I can’t thank you enough. We’ve been through everything together and it’s been an honour to represent you. Diolch.

“Secondly, thank you to all the clubs I’ve been lucky enough to play for. Thank you to all the managers and staff that have helped me be able to live my dream and play at the highest level.

“And a huge thank you to my wife and children and all my family. Without you by my side throughout, none of this would have been possible.”
