Ghanaian singer Wendy Shay has shown immense compassion by donating to traders affected by the devastating fire at Kantamanto Market in Accra on January 2, 2025.
The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Thursday, engulfed large sections of the market, affecting over 30,000 traders and destroying more than 7,000 shops. Efforts to contain the fire were hindered by water shortages and logistical challenges, causing further damage.
However, Wendy Shay has joined a growing list of public figures who are extending their support to help the victims rebuild their businesses and lives.
Wendy visited Kantamanto Market and shared a video of her donation on Instagram on Sunday, January 5, 2025. In the video, Wendy is seen interacting with traders, showering money upon them, and discreetly giving an undisclosed amount in an envelope. Although it is reported elsewhere that she donated GHC 10,000, we cannot confirm if that’s correct at the moment.
Her Instagram caption read: “Earlier this afternoon I passed by Kantamanto to support those affected by the fire outbreak. May God strengthen them in this difficult time.”
Wendy’s donation follows similar acts of generosity from other notable figures, including O.K. Frimpong, Member of Parliament-elect for Asante Akyem North Constituency, and business mogul Nana Kwame Bediako, a presidential aspirant for the 2024 elections, who have also visited the site to offer support.
The Or Foundation Commits $1 Million USD to Kantamanto Market Emergency Relief Efforts Following Catastrophic Fire. The Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has also expressed his solidarity with traders affected, and pledged a donation of GH¢200,000 to aid in their recovery.
The traders, visibly moved by Wendy’s gesture, commended the singer for her kindness and expressed their commitment to supporting her in all her future endeavors.
