Will Smith Resigns From the Oscars Academy After Slapping Chris Rock [Details]

After serving the presenter, Chris Rock with a hot and dirty slap at the just ended Ocars 2022 (Academy awards) during his presentation, American actor Will Smith has announced his resignation from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences.

The actor made this known in a press statement which he released on Friday, April 1, 2022, following his unacceptable actions that have fast gone viral and are being talked about by everyone.

Smith in his resignation statement said that he has directly responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice and will fully accept any consequences that come out for him based on his actions.

He acknowledged the fact that he betrayed the trust of the academy, he also confirmed he took away the shine of other nominees and winners with his actions that have gone viral, deprived other nominees and award winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work for which he is very much heartbroken for.

He again added that he has decided to resign from membership in the academy of motion picture arts and science and will accept any further consequences that come with it.

This he says will be the best way for him to put the focus back on those who deserve the attention for their achievements and also allow the Academy to get back to the credible works it does to support and throw more light on the creativity and artistry in the filming industry.

Will Smith after the incident on the night of the awards show and after regretting his actions publicly in an Instagram post shared on his page apologized to Chris Rock and the Academy board for his actions which we published here.

Read his full statement below;

“I have directly responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable.

“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home.
“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work.
“I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.

“So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate. Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.”

The Academy’s president David Rubin said it had accepted Smith’s resignation, but would continue its disciplinary proceedings.

“We have received and accepted Mr. Will Smith’s immediate resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. We will continue to move forward with our disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, in advance of our next scheduled board meeting on April 18.” said David.
