A Wisconsin woman has been arrested and charged with arson after allegedly starting a fire in her apartment earlier this month.
Charmilia Jeffries, 36, was charged with one felony count of arson of a building without the owner’s consent after the blaze in northwest Milwaukee on December 21.
According to reports, first responders were able to contain the fire, and fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. However, Jeffries provided a bizarre explanation for the fire, claiming that “witchcraft” was involved.
In a criminal complaint obtained by WISN, authorities revealed that Jeffries had instructed her son to remove the smoke detectors from her apartment because she believed they were “suspicious.”

She later reportedly told police that someone had placed “witchcraft traps” in her home.
Jeffries went on to explain that a “satanic ritual” was being performed around that time, and she believed that “they” had been setting traps to target her.
Jeffries was arrested the same day as the fire, and she remains in the Milwaukee County Jail on a $7,500 cash bail. Her next court appearance is scheduled for January 24.
The Milwaukee Police Department has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding the case.
Though no one was harmed in the fire, the unusual circumstances surrounding the incident have raised questions as authorities continue to investigate the situation.
