A woman from Zhejiang, China, has captured attention online with a peculiar and unsettling claim that she contracted the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) from holding a karaoke microphone too close to her lips.
Sharing her story on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, the woman recounted how the incident dates back to 2017 (8-years ago). During a visit to a karaoke lounge, she became overly enthusiastic with her performance and pressed the microphone close to her mouth. Sometime afterward, she noticed tiny, painful blisters appearing around her lips.
She thought the blisters were only a small annoyance, so she was shocked when they went away and then reappeared a few days later. She went to the doctor out of concern and was given the devastating news that she had contracted HSV-1, a virus that causes cold sores around the lips.
The woman has been dealing with the condition for the past eight years. “I have to carry this virus for life; there is no medication available to treat it,” she explained in her video, expressing her frustration. “There is only medication to relieve the pain, but the symptoms are recurring.”
Convinced the karaoke microphone was the source of her infection, she explained she had no history of cold sores prior to the event. Her struggles have escalated in recent years, with cold sores now appearing on her cheeks as well.

The video quickly went viral on Chinese social media, sparking widespread debate. While her story has drawn sympathy, dermatologists have yet to validate her claim that HSV-1 could be transmitted via contact with a contaminated microphone.
Experts explain that while the virus spreads through skin-to-skin contact or shared items like utensils, the likelihood of contracting it from a karaoke microphone remains uncertain.
A dermatologist interviewed about the case noted that while antiviral medications can help manage symptoms and reduce transmission risks, HSV-1 remains a lifelong condition with no known cure.
The woman’s story has raised awareness about the importance of hygiene when using shared equipment, though its accuracy continues to be a topic of discussion among medical professionals and online commenters alike.
