The unsettling discovery was made last Thursday after weeks of odd sounds emanating from the crawlspace beneath the home. Initially, the woman and her family dismissed the noises as being caused by stray animals passing through.

However, when the sounds grew louder and appeared to respond to movement in the house, suspicions arose, prompting them to contact the police.

Ricardo Silva, the elderly homeowner’s son-in-law, described the eerie situation: “It was usually late at night, and we just chucked it off to animals being under the house. The noises were kind of like knocking… as my wife was walking, they were kind of knocking back from under the house, so she said, you know, something’s wrong.”

When officers arrived, they discovered a man in the crawlspace but faced significant challenges in getting him out.

Despite their efforts, including verbal commands and attempts to scare him with police dogs, the man refused to budge. After hours of negotiations, authorities resorted to using tear gas to force him out.

“He refused to leave. He wasn’t scared of the dogs, and the first two attempts at gas didn’t fish him out,” Silva explained. “It’s a bizarre thing, but it’s not uncommon in this day and age, with people looking for shelter.”

The man, identified as 27-year-old Issac Betancourt, is suspected to have been living under the house for as long as six months.

The family, shaken by the ordeal, plans to block off the crawlspace entirely to prevent similar incidents in the future. The area under the house, which is only two feet high, had provided Betancourt with hidden access.

While the unusual situation has left the family rattled, it serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the homeless population in urban areas and the importance of home security.
