Joe DiMeo, a 22-year-old burn survivor, is making headlines not only for his extraordinary journey but also for the love story that bloomed from an Instagram message.
After a horrific car accident left him with burns on 80% of his body, Joe became the first recipient of a combined face and double hand transplant.
But while his recovery was nothing short of remarkable, it was a simple message to a nurse, Jessica, that changed his life in ways he never imagined.
In 2018, Joe fell asleep at the wheel and crashed, his car catching fire. He was in a coma for three months, and after awakening, he spent months in burn rehab.
His medical journey led to a groundbreaking transplant, which was performed in 2020 by Dr. Eduardo D. Rodriguez and a team of more than 140 medical professionals at NYU Langone.
The transplant, which involved a 47-year-old donor’s face and hands, restored Joe’s independence, but it also brought him viral fame.
That’s when he sent a message on Instagram to Jessica, who had been working with transplant patients at the time.
