The tragic death of 27-year-old Zakithi Zasemhlungwini Ndaba has sparked outrage in South Africa, as family members, friends, and advocacy groups call for justice after she was shot and killed by her boyfriend.
Zakithi, a woman who had a promising future as a journalist and culinary student, was found dead in her Sunninghill, Johannesburg apartment on March 7, 2025.
Zakithi’s family grew concerned when they could not reach her and contacted security personnel, who later discovered her lifeless body.
Her death, which is believed to be a result of domestic violence, has left her loved ones devastated and searching for answers. The boyfriend, Aviwe Poswa, fled the scene after the shooting but turned himself in to the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Sunday, March 16, 2025.

The tragedy has drawn attention to the widespread issue of domestic violence in South Africa, with advocacy group Women For Change demanding immediate action.
The group’s statement, issued on March 17, described Zakithi as a “vibrant soul” whose life was senselessly cut short. They called for stronger measures to protect victims of domestic violence and ensure justice for Zakithi.

A friend of Zakithi, Sibusisiwe Busie, took to social media to shed light on the events leading up to the shooting. Busie revealed that Zakithi had tried to end her relationship with Aviwe, but he allegedly threatened to take their child away with the help of his family.

According to Busie, Zakithi’s efforts to leave were met with increasing threats, which culminated in the tragic killing.
Zakithi leaves behind a young child and a family in mourning. The ongoing investigation has led to calls for a bail hearing for Aviwe Poswa, which is set for March 20, 2025, at the Alexandra Court in Johannesburg.
This heartbreaking incident has fueled calls for stricter laws against femicide and domestic violence, with advocacy groups urging authorities to act swiftly to prevent further tragedies.
