During the march, the staff and students were exposed to the intense heat for long periods of time, leading to their dehydration and eventual unconsciousness.

The paramedics sent to provide first aid during the regional Independence Day procession included Yakubu Amin Abukari, the head of the Ghana Red Cross Society’s Northern Region, who reported that all 72 patients have subsequently been revived.

Among the dignitaries present at the procession were Tamale mayor Sule Salifu and Northern regional minister Shani Alhassan Shaibu.
