Rihanna reveals she declined to purchase maternity clothes

Renowned for her avant-garde approach to fashion, Rihanna disclosed to the BBC her unconventional view of maternity wear, saying that she “refused to buy maternity clothes” while she was pregnant.

“I treated it the same as I do any fashion-related task. All I want is to do things my way, with constant variation and personal touch. “Whatever fits is going to work,” Rihanna said during the celebration for the debut of her newest Puma partnership. “That made me challenge myself to get clever with style.”

The multi-Grammy Award winner, who is parents to two sons with rapper A$AP Rocky, talked about how her style changed as a mother and highlighted the changes she made to fit her expanding family.

“I was able to wear heels with my first pregnancy, but not during my second one because I had a toddler, a belly, it was cold, and I had a baby bag, so I thought, ‘Heels? Perhaps not. I therefore became creative with my look because of this,” she continued.

When Rihanna looked back on her post-pregnancy wardrobe choices, she acknowledged that she had indulged in comfort but that, as she returned to the stage, she had rediscovering her love of fashion.

After having my second child, I became overly comfortable and started dressing in sweatpants, robes, and pyjamas. I’m enjoying my outfits and playing [live] again now,” she said.

The singer stressed the need of empowerment and self-discovery for moms, especially in light of the hectic nature of raising two small children.

Rihanna concluded, highlighting the transformational experience of motherhood and its influence on personal identity and style. “Being able to allow myself mentally to have that space to approach my closet and create stuff – after you have kids, it does something for you as a woman and as a mum, and that’s really important,” she said.
