Trump Administration Alleges Columbia University Violated Jewish Students' Rights, Accreditation at Risk

The Trump administration made headlines Wednesday by formally notifying Columbia University’s accreditor of possible Title VI violations, highlighting the importance of federal oversight. The university now faces the possibility of losing its accreditation due to allegations that it failed to enforce federal civil rights laws.

According to a statement released by the U.S. Department of Education, Columbia University is accused of turning a blind eye to the harassment of Jewish students on its campus.

The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights (HHS OCR) and the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) jointly determined that the university’s inaction constituted a breach of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The federal agencies say Columbia has been in violation of civil rights protections since October 7, 2023. That date marks the beginning of renewed conflict in the Middle East, when Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of over 1,200 individuals and the abduction of hundreds more.

In response to the attack, Israel began military actions in Gaza, which have reportedly led to more than 54,000 deaths. The Department of Education argues that Columbia’s failure to respond to the rising tensions and antisemitic incidents on campus since that date displays a “deliberate indifference” toward the safety of Jewish students.

The Education Department says this neglect places Columbia in direct violation of accreditation standards set by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. These standards require institutions to remain compliant with all relevant government laws and regulations.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon condemned the university’s conduct in a sharply worded statement. “Columbia has acted with deliberate indifference toward the harassment of Jewish students on its campus,” McMahon said, labeling the university’s response as both “immoral” and “unlawful.”

McMahon added that the Department of Education will work closely with the Middle States Commission to ensure Columbia’s adherence to federal civil rights laws and accreditation protocols. The administration is now pressuring the university to take immediate corrective action to prevent loss of status and funding.
