A tragic incident unfolded in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where a 66-year-old woman, Kimberly Ann Charlton, is facing a first-degree murder charge following the fatal shooting of her 72-year-old husband, David Alan Charlton. Authorities say the fatal altercation stemmed from a heated dispute over the couple’s dog.
According to police, the shooting happened inside the Charlton residence located on Newland Drive around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The neighborhood sits roughly 100 miles from Des Moines. Emergency services rushed to the home following a report about a domestic disturbance involving a possible shooting.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered David Charlton suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the back. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Kimberly Charlton was still at the home and was immediately taken into custody by officers.
In a press release, the Cedar Falls Department of Public Safety confirmed that several agencies, including Black Hawk County Dispatch, MercyOne Paramedics, and the Cedar Falls Fire Division, were involved in the response.

Further details were revealed through a criminal complaint obtained by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. During questioning, Kimberly claimed the confrontation began earlier in the bedroom, where she alleged her husband tried to assault her. She told investigators that their dog interrupted the confrontation, potentially stopping the assault.
Kimberly said David then left the bedroom and came back holding a cane, threatening to beat the dog. The pet reportedly ran down the hallway, and David followed with the cane in hand. That’s when Kimberly allegedly retrieved a firearm from a dresser drawer.
As she approached the hallway, she reportedly warned her husband, saying, “I’m going to shoot you if you don’t stop.” When David continued following the dog, Kimberly admitted to pulling the trigger, shooting her husband in the back.
Police have not reported any evidence of a struggle or any injuries to Kimberly. Authorities have confirmed that the household legally owned the firearm used.
Kimberly Charlton is now being held at the Black Hawk County Jail. Court records show she’s being detained on a $1 million bond as the investigation continues. No trial date has been announced as of now.
