Grand Rapids, Michigan – A Michigan man has been sentenced to 25 to 50 years behind bars for the brutal murder of his wife, Alicia Lofton, whom he gunned down just one day after she served him divorce papers.

Marcus Lofton, 44, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the August 2023 slaying of his 38-year-old wife, bringing a tragic close to a turbulent relationship that had turned violent months earlier.

The couple had only been married for six months when Alicia decided to end the relationship following a domestic violence incident in May 2023.

Court records show that Marcus had been arrested and ordered to cease all contact with his wife at the time. As Alicia prepared to sell their shared home and move on with her life, tensions reached a boiling point.

On August 17, 2023, the day after Alicia officially served him divorce papers, Marcus returned to the house under the pretense of collecting his belongings.

According to investigators, an argument broke out, during which Marcus retrieved Alicia’s Glock pistol from a drawer. The weapon discharged, prompting Alicia to flee and lock herself in the bathroom.

As she tried to escape through a window, Marcus forced his way inside and opened fire, shooting her 15 times. He then fled the scene in an SUV. Responding to frantic 911 calls from neighbors, police arrived to find Alicia’s body on the lawn with “numerous fatal gunshot wounds.”

The case initially went to trial, but a mistrial was declared after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict. Marcus ultimately accepted a plea deal, changing his plea to guilty.

During Tuesday’s sentencing in Kalamazoo County, Marcus sat silently in the courtroom as grieving family members of the victim addressed him.

Alicia’s father, Arthur Joseph, held back tears as he delivered a scathing message to the man who took his daughter’s life.

“I just want the world to know that this guy is a piece of garbage. I wish I could handle this and serve justice on his a— right now,” Joseph said, quoted by MLive.com.

Judge Scott Noto, who presided over the case, delivered the sentence, ensuring Marcus Lofton would spend the next several decades in prison for the killing that shocked the community.

Alicia Lofton leaves behind three adult children and a family devastated by the senseless act of domestic gun violence.

This case shines a harsh light on the dangers victims often face when trying to leave abusive relationships, a moment many advocates call the most life-threatening time for domestic abuse survivors.
