A Wisconsin mother has entered a not guilty plea to charges that she fatally shot the father of her children, a case now unfolding as one of Eau Claire County’s most serious homicide prosecutions.

Dakota Bilderback, 29, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of 37-year-old Michael Lee.

According to the Eau Claire Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call on Aug. 30 at a residence on Sunset Drive and found Lee dead from two gunshot wounds to the face. Bilderback was taken into custody after officers interviewed her at the scene.

A criminal complaint obtained by WEAU states that Bilderback initially called 911 to report that someone was injured, later telling the dispatcher that Lee had been shot. When asked who fired the weapon, she reportedly said, “I had to shoot my children’s father. To protect my children.”

After being read her Miranda rights, Bilderback allegedly told investigators she had been carrying a firearm because she was experiencing suicidal thoughts and wanted to intimidate Lee. She said she sent her children upstairs so the two could talk.

According to the complaint, she placed the gun to her own head, expecting Lee to “help” her pull the trigger. Instead, she allegedly fired at Lee, striking him in the face. She admitted to firing a second shot to “stop the threat,” the affidavit said.

Bilderback also told authorities she had been struggling with mental health challenges, which she said were intensified by methamphetamine use.

Police initially arrested her on a second-degree homicide charge, but prosecutors later elevated the case to first-degree intentional homicide.

A GoFundMe campaign created in Lee’s memory described him as “a cherished son, beloved brother, and true friend to all who knew him. Michael’s kindness, laughter, and warmth touched everyone around him.” The post added, “His sudden departure has left a void that can never be filled, and he was taken from us far too soon.”

Bilderback remains in the Eau Claire County Jail on a $250,000 cash bond. Her next court hearing is scheduled for March 12, 2026, where prosecutors are expected to outline additional evidence.
