Louisiana first degree murder case

A 28-year-old Louisiana woman is facing a first-degree murder charge after authorities say she fatally shot her 1-year-old daughter inside the family’s home, then made a chilling statement to the child’s father moments after the incident.

Kristin Bass was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office jail on Friday, according to records reviewed by Law&Crime. Local outlets, including the Beaumont Enterprise, report that Bass has been formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death.

The incident unfolded on New Year’s Day at a residence on Quelqueshue Street in Sulphur. Investigators say Bass was inside the home with her two children — a 1-year-old and a 2-year-old — along with their father, Bradley Moss. At some point, Moss told authorities he heard a loud noise and rushed toward it, where he found Bass holding a gun.

The baby, later identified by Moss as Acelynn Moss, had been shot. The couple’s 2-year-old daughter was nearby, crying and calling out for help, according to Lake Charles-based NBC and KPLC.

“Help me, daddy,” the older child reportedly cried.

Moss later recounted the moment in an interview with the station, describing the devastating loss and what he says Bass told him afterward.

“I almost lost two babies,” Moss said. “I lost one because her mama wanted to send her to God.”

Authorities allege Bass appeared unremorseful in the immediate aftermath. According to reports, she told Moss, “I just sent our baby to God.” Moss further claimed Bass added, “Now I gotta get her.”

Sulphur police officers arrived at the home shortly after 8 p.m. Bass was taken into custody without incident. The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services assumed custody of the surviving 2-year-old child.

Court records show Bass’ bond was set at $10 million. As of Friday, the case remained under active investigation, and officials had not released additional details regarding a possible motive.

Sulphur is located in southwestern Louisiana, approximately 10 miles west of Lake Charles.
