A bear that spent months living beneath a Southern California home may have simply relocated rather than moved on, according to residents and wildlife advocates monitoring the situation.
The animal, which had been frequenting the crawlspace under an Altadena home owned by Ken Johnson since at least April, was successfully removed last week after intervention by the BEAR League, a Lake Tahoe-based nonprofit specializing in humane bear management.
The organization installed an electrified mat at the crawlspace entrance to deter the bear from returning, effectively ending its long-term stay.
However, relief for Johnson may have come at a cost for neighbors. Residents living roughly half a mile away reported discovering a bear now occupying their own crawlspace.
Photos shared by the homeowners show a bear sheltering beneath the structure, prompting speculation that it could be the same animal displaced from Johnson’s property.
Wildlife officials have not confirmed whether the bear seen at the second location is the same one evicted earlier. Without clear identifying markers, authorities say it remains difficult to determine if the bear simply moved on to the nearest suitable shelter or if multiple bears are active in the area.
Local officials continue to urge homeowners to secure crawlspaces and avoid unintentionally attracting wildlife.
