- TikTok user remanded over alleged fake plot against Mahama
- Court declined to take plea; next appearance set for February 9, 2026
- Video allegedly named two military officers
- Ghana Police Service is the complainant in the case
- Accused admits posting video but denies knowing the officers
The Adenta Circuit Court has ordered the remand of a 30-year-old laundry attendant after prosecutors accused him of spreading false information capable of causing fear and public panic through social media.
Ahmed Hassan Abdul Razzaq, a TikTok user operating under the handle @breakingnewsghana, was taken into police custody after allegedly publishing a video claiming that two military officers were plotting to assassinate President John Dramani Mahama.
The court declined to take his plea and directed that he remain in custody until February 9, 2026.
The case is being prosecuted by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, with the Ghana Police Service listed as the complainant. According to the prosecution, the video was uploaded on January 20, 2026, and explicitly named Sergeant Amoh and Sergeant Joseph as the officers supposedly behind the alleged plot.
Police told the court that Razzaq was arrested the following day at Adjiringanor in the Greater Accra Region after investigations traced the video to his account.
In his caution statement, Razzaq admitted recording and sharing the video but denied any personal knowledge of the officers mentioned. He told investigators he had “chanced upon a post on social media” that referenced the alleged plot and claimed this influenced his decision to publish the content.
Investigators, however, said Razzaq failed to provide any verifiable source for the claim or lead officers to the original post he cited. Prosecutors maintain that the publication was false and had the potential to incite fear and undermine public order.
The matter has been adjourned as police continue investigations, with the accused expected to reappear before the court next month.
