Reid Missing Alabama 800x450 1

Authorities in Alabama say a months-long search for a missing toddler has turned into a homicide investigation, with the child’s mother now facing capital murder charges in a case that has shaken the local community.

Police in the city of Enterprise announced Monday that 33-year-old Adrienne Reid has been arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with the death of her young daughter, Genesis Reid. Investigators believe the child was killed on Christmas Day and later discarded in a dumpster outside their apartment complex.

Despite extensive efforts, the toddler’s remains have not yet been located.

According to authorities, surveillance cameras captured Reid late on Christmas night placing a rolling duffel bag inside a dumpster at her apartment complex on Apach Drive.

Police say the footage, recorded around 11:30 p.m., became a crucial piece of evidence in the investigation.

Two days later, investigators say Reid returned to the same dumpster and threw away several items, including toys that officers believe belonged to Genesis.

Enterprise Police Chief Michael Moore described the conclusion investigators reached after weeks of reviewing evidence.

“Through the careful and methodical work of investigators, we have reached the heartbreaking and horrific conclusion that her mother, her caretaker, the one that should have been there to keep her safe, willfully murdered Genesis and placed her in a duffle bag and discarded her in a dumpster,” Moore said.

The case first gained attention in February when Reid reported her daughter missing.

According to police, Reid called authorities at 3:10 a.m. on February 16, claiming she had discovered Genesis gone from her bed. She also told officers a door in their apartment appeared to have been opened.

Neighbors later told investigators they had not seen the toddler for weeks prior to the report. Several residents said they had regularly seen the girl earlier in the winter while she was walking around the neighborhood with her mother.

Investigators believe the duffel bag containing the child was picked up by garbage trucks the day after Christmas and eventually transported to the regional landfill in Coffee County.

Officials say locating the remains will be extremely challenging due to how waste is processed.

“I need the public to understand that this will not be an easy or fast search,” Coffee County Sheriff Scott Byrd said.

“The subject dumpster where the bag we are looking for was picked up on December 26. It was compacted in the truck that picked up it.

“It was taken to a distribution facility and compacted again. It was taken on another truck to the landfill where it was processed further with bulldozers and a compacting machine.”

Search teams are now preparing for a complex examination of landfill areas, a process authorities say could take months.

Prosecutors say the evidence gathered during the investigation shows a deliberate attempt to conceal the crime.

James Tarbox, the district attorney for Coffee County, confirmed that his office intends to pursue the death penalty.

“She literally threw her in the trash, and then she engaged in a 53 day long campaign of deceit, lies and manipulation,” he said.

In addition to the capital murder charge, Reid is also facing accusations of providing false information to law enforcement and abuse of a corpse.

Authorities say the suspect remains jailed without bond as the investigation continues.
