A routine food delivery in North Carolina took a disturbing turn when a DoorDash driver reportedly uncovered a homicide after noticing a strong odor coming from an apartment.
Authorities say the delivery driver alerted police after detecting what witnesses described as a “foul smell” at a residence in an East Charlotte apartment complex. The tip ultimately led officers to the body of 26-year-old Evelin Enamorado-Cisnado, whose remains were discovered hidden inside a closet and concealed with towels.
According to court documents obtained by WCNC, officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to the apartment last Tuesday around 4:30 p.m. during a welfare check. Inside the residence, investigators located Enamorado-Cisnado’s body behind a door in the closet area.
Police later arrested 23-year-old Lhis Brito-Costa and charged her with first-degree murder in connection with the killing.
Authorities allege Brito-Costa shot Enamorado-Cisnado after learning that she had been involved in another relationship. The arrest warrant describes the killing in stark terms, stating: “[Brito-Costa] unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did of malice aforethought kill and murder [Enamorado-Cisnado].”
Investigators say the DoorDash driver had arrived at the apartment to deliver food when the situation unfolded. According to court filings reviewed by WCNC, someone inside the residence told the driver that Enamorado-Cisnado was dead in the apartment. It remains unclear whether Brito-Costa herself made that statement to the driver.
The delivery worker subsequently contacted authorities, prompting the police response that led to the grim discovery.
Family members later confirmed that the victim was found with the help of the delivery driver’s observation.
One relative wrote on Facebook that Enamorado-Cisnado was discovered “thanks to a young man delivering an order who noticed a foul smell.”
The relative also expressed grief and anger over the circumstances surrounding the killing, writing: “It hurts to think how that wretched woman could heartlessly take her life, simply because my niece no longer wanted to be with her.”
According to the family, Enamorado-Cisnado was originally from Honduras. Relatives are now working to arrange transportation of her remains back to her home country for burial.
Brito-Costa is currently being held without bond. Court records show she is scheduled to return to court on April 2 as the criminal case moves forward.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue reviewing evidence and witness statements connected to the fatal shooting.
