Authorities in New York have charged an 18-year-old with second-degree murder following a violent early-morning attack that left his grandmother’s fiancé dead, according to law enforcement officials.
The suspect, Noel Bermudez-Chin, was arraigned in court in Central Islip just hours after the incident, which unfolded inside a trailer in East Northport. Police say the teenager himself placed the emergency call that led officers to the scene.
According to the Suffolk County Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 3:42 a.m. on Sunday reporting that a man had been stabbed multiple times. When authorities arrived, they found 61-year-old Joseph Falvo critically injured.
Prosecutors allege the attack began while Falvo was asleep. Courtroom reporting indicates Bermudez-Chin told investigators he threw boiling oil and boiling water on the victim before carrying out the stabbing.
Court documents further state that Bermudez-Chin admitted he stabbed Falvo “five or six times in the back and then stabbed him in the stomach.” Investigators have not disclosed a motive for the attack.
Emergency responders transported Falvo to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The victim had recently become engaged to Cecilia Bermudez, the suspect’s grandmother. Reports indicate the couple planned to marry in July after becoming engaged earlier this year.
At the time of the incident, all three individuals were living together in a trailer situated on a residential property. The arrangement followed a house fire in December 2025 that displaced the family.
Police later located Bermudez-Chin about a mile from the scene and took him into custody without incident. He was booked at the department’s 3rd Precinct and formally charged with second-degree murder.
During his arraignment, a judge ordered that Bermudez-Chin be held without bail. He is scheduled to return to court on April 3 as the case moves forward.
