GREENVILLE, S.C. — Emergency responders found an opioid overdose reversal drug inside the residence where actress Hayden Panettiere was pronounced dead on Sunday, according to initial reports from TMZ.
First responders declared the 35-year-old star dead at 2:32 p.m.. While authorities have not officially established her exact cause or manner of death, emergency dispatch communications reveal that crews treated the call as a possible overdose and performed CPR at the scene.
Medics discovered Narcan on a mattress inside the South Carolina apartment. Narcan is a medication commonly used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Responders also administered epinephrine, an emergency drug used during attempts to restart the heart in cases of cardiac arrest.
The medical intervention aligns with the initial 911 call reporting a woman believed to be in cardiac arrest. Two separate ambulances responded to the residence, suggesting that more than one person may have needed medical attention. However, neither vehicle transported anyone from the home.
The presence of Narcan does not establish that an overdose occurred. Officials have not confirmed who received the medication or why it was present. Reports pointing to an overdose remain unconfirmed until authorities release official findings.
Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, had been staying at the Greenville residence. Hickerson has not been reached since news of her death broke.
In a May interview with TMZ, Hickerson spoke warmly about the actress, acknowledging that he believed she would be better off without him and noting that he simply wanted to see her “flourish.”
Panettiere was widely known for her starring television roles in “Heroes” and “Nashville.” Investigators are currently working to determine the circumstances surrounding her death as fans and fellow performers mourn the loss.
