LOS ANGELES — Captain Jack Sparrow may set sail once again. Franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed Disney is talking with Johnny Depp about returning for a sixth Pirates Of The Caribbean movie.
”We’re talking to Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done,” Bruckheimer said to US outlet Deadline at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.
The upcoming movie would be the sixth full-length film in the blockbuster series. Disney released the last feature, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, back in 2017.
Depp previously stated he had no plans to return to his iconic role. During his 2022 defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard, the actor pointed out how Disney handled his image during the legal battle.
”They didn’t remove my character from the rides. They didn’t stop selling merchandise of Captain Jack Sparrow. They didn’t stop selling dolls of Captain Jack Sparrow,” Depp told the court. “They didn’t stop selling anything. They just didn’t want there to be something trailing behind me that they’d find.”
Other original cast members are open to a reunion. Co-star Orlando Bloom, who plays Will Turner, shared his thoughts on ITV’s This Morning last year.
”Well, I don’t know, I can’t say anything at the moment because I really don’t know, but there’s definitely availability,” the 49-year-old actor said when asked about future films. “I think they’re trying to work out what it would all look like. I personally think it’d be great to get the band back together; that would be great, but there are always different ideas, and so we’ll see where it lands.”
The film series started in 2003 with The Curse Of The Black Pearl, inspired by the famous Disneyland theme park ride. It quickly grew into a massive world with video games and a 2011 short film titled Pirates Of The Caribbean: Tales Of The Code: Wedlocked.
Four feature sequels followed the original hit:
- Dead Man’s Chest (2006)
- At World’s End (2007)
- On Stranger Tides (2011)
- Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)
Depp has kept busy with other acting projects while screenplay work continues. Last month at San Diego Comic-Con, he dressed up as Ebenezer Scrooge to promote his upcoming film Ebenezer, set for release this November.
