German newspaper Bild reported that an email from Thomas Tuchel’s ex-wife has revealed the reason for his departure from Chelsea.
The email was presented during a hearing at Munich’s district court following the couple’s separation after 13 years of marriage.
Tuchel was unexpectedly fired from his role as Chelsea’s manager in September 2021 after losses to Leeds, Southampton, and Dynamo Zagreb at the beginning of the season.
Despite his dismissal, Chelsea fans have continued to chant his name at games, expressing dissatisfaction with his successor, Graham Potter. However, according to Bild’s report, Tuchel’s sacking was not solely due to the team’s performance, as his ex-wife’s email revealed two other reasons.
Tuchel’s performance as Chelsea boss
When Thomas Tuchel took over from Frank Lampard, Chelsea was in turmoil, with a large section of the fan base unhappy and the team sitting in ninth place in the Premier League.
However, Tuchel quickly turned things around, leading Chelsea to their second Champions League title in less than five months and winning the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup the following season.
He managed to unite the fan base, and Stamford Bridge was filled with chants and banners praising the “Deutscher Maestro.”
Despite this success, some fans grew concerned about Chelsea’s performances at the start of the 2022/23 season, with the team losing to Leeds, Southampton, and Zagreb.
The day after the Zagreb defeat, Chelsea fans were notified that Todd Boehly had sacked Tuchel as the club’s manager.
Why Tuchel was sacked?
However, the reasons for Tuchel’s sacking apparently went beyond poor team performance.
According to Bild and The Daily Mail, Tuchel’s ex-wife Sissi received a phone call in which she was given reasons for her former husband’s dismissal from Chelsea.
She reportedly wrote the reasons down in an email, which revealed that the players had “lost respect” for Tuchel and that “off-field reasons” were also cited.
Bild reported that Tuchel planned to use a temporary injunction to prevent Sissi from disclosing the content of the email.
The wording of some of the claims in the email could not be published for legal reasons, and neither Tuchel nor his ex-wife commented on the matter during the hearing.
The pair married in 2009 and had two daughters together. The Mail on Sunday revealed in April last year that the couple had split with Sissi beginning divorce proceedings.
