Abdul Fatawu’s extra-time stunner sends Leicester into FA Cup quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Bournemouth

Abdul Fatawu’s incredible goal in extra time sent Championship leaders Leicester City past Premier League Bournemouth and into the FA Cup quarterfinals.

Normal time ended with neither team scoring, despite both teams hitting the crossbar and missing good opportunities.

Fatawu grabbed the ball on the edge of the area as extra time approached and curled a shot beyond Cherries keeper Mark Travers’ hands into the upper right corner.

For the first time since they won the competition in 2021, Enzo Maresca’s team advanced to the round of eight thanks to the goal.

The loss extends Bournemouth’s winless streak to six games in all competitions, but now that Andoni Iraola’s team is eight points clear of the drop zone in the Premier League, they can focus on securing their survival.

Maresca declared, “It was a good game and a good win.”

“I don’t think that winning tonight proves that we are Premier League calibre, nor do I think that losing does. It’s only a game. We are pleased with the level we demonstrated tonight.

“It is disappointing and it was a bad night for us because at the end it was the worst thing that could happen,” Iraola said, his team having 27 shots on goal.

“In the end, if you play 120 minutes and don’t score, you should be sent off. We had plenty of shots and opportunities to complete the play.

“I believe there was a missed opportunity.”
