Economic hardship has forced a family to nearly sell their child because they had run out of options and were left with only one option: sell off one child in order to feed themselves and their remaining children.

This happened in Balkh, which is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan, located in the north of the country.

According to a report published by Tolo News on Saturday, the child who nearly got sold by her family was lucky enough as she got rescued by some Local Official in the town who offered the family some form of assistance which help save the child from getting soled.

The child is less than two years old.

This child’s father worked as a cook in one of Mazar-e-hotels Sharif’s a year ago, but due to poverty, this family was willing to sell their child in order to feed their other children.

According to the deputy governor of Balkh, Noorul Hadi Abu Idris, they had a meeting with the Red Cross for some couple of days to ask for their help with with the situation on ground which they agreed on.

“There was some food in the Red Cross warehouses in Balkh province, and we assisted this family to better their economic situation,” said Yar Mohammad Farooqi, the head of the Red Crescent in the northern region.

Why did The Family want To Sell The Child?

The mother of the child speaking on her reason for selling her child stated that she was forced to do so due to the extreme poverty situation she found herself in.

“I’m in a really difficult situation; I have nothing to eat or use for fuel; I haven’t made any preparations for the winter. I have to sell my daughter and get some items for the winter,” said Nasrin, the mother of the child.

Although Religious clerics said that selling children is immoral and urged the government to assist poor families. That did not happen as authouries were not offering the poor ones support which is now forcing some of them to do what they did not want to do.

She added that she went to the authorities more than twice to seek financial aid, begging them to put her name on a list in case they could help her, which they did, but she never heard from them.

“I myself went to the authorities two or three times and begged them to put my name on the list in case assistance is offered. They replied that we have put down your name, but so far I have not received any support,” Nasrin said.

“Our living conditions are really difficult; please help us so that my sister will not be sold,” said Muska, another daughter of Nasrin, a sister to the child to nearly got sold.

A neighbour of their disclosed how bad she felt upon hearing the news of them selling their infant daughter adding that she couldn’t even eat.

“It has been two or three days since I heard that they are selling their daughter. I swear to God that I can’t eat,” said Shahkhanum, a neighbor of Nasrin.

The local Balkh official said that they had assisted the child’s family and stopped the child from being sold.

People in Afghanistan have reportedly received no basic amenities since the Taliban took control of the country, resulting in a severe humanitarian crisis.

The World Food Programme has also expressed concern about Afghanistan’s economic crisis and rising unemployment.

Following an unusual increase in food insecurity in Afghanistan, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has provided assistance to 38% of Afghans in order to help them avoid the effects of the ongoing crisis.
