Following the team’s first-ever league title, the Albanian team FK Egnatia honoured former goalscorer Raphael Dwamena with a special homage.

After defeating rivals Partizani 1-0 in the play-off final on Sunday, Egnatia was named Super League winners for the first time in the club’s 89-year history.

In a fiercely contested game, Melih Ibrahimoglu’s goal in the 35th minute separated the two teams.

Egnatia had Dwamena on their roster prior to his untimely death in November 2023, following his collapse on the pitch.

Intriguingly, the deceased former Ghana international passed away during a match between Egnatia and Partizani, the opponents on Sunday.

Play was halted and the game was eventually suspended on that fatal day when Dwamena, who suffered from a chronic cardiac disease, suddenly collapsed to the ground and lost consciousness.

The former Red Bull Salzburg forward was not able to be revived, despite his teammates’ prompt appeal for help from the physicians. After a funeral at Ajiriganor in Accra on February 19, the former forward for FC Zurich and Red Bull Salzburg was buried.

With Dwamena having scored nine goals in 11 games before to his death, he made a significant contribution to Egnatia’s championship run. When the club won the Albanian championship for the first time, they honoured Dwamena.

The shirt of the deceased player was hoisted alongside the league trophy, and the squad also sent a message on Instagram with the caption, “For you, Raphael Dwamena.”

Dwamena excelled at the Red Bull Academy in Ghana prior to his terrible demise, and teams in Austria, Switzerland, Spain, and Denmark recruited him. He also made nine appearances for Ghana; his most notable performance was a double against the Walia Ibex in an AFCON qualification match against Ethiopia.
