According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announcement on Monday, Hollywood veteran Angela Bassett will receive an honorary Oscar at the 14th Governors Awards on Nov. 18.
Honorary Oscar recipients are voted on by the Academy’s Board of Governors and are given to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy.
During her illustrious career, Bassett has earned two Academy nominations. Her first nomination came in 1994 in the “Best Actress” category for her role in “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” and she most recently earned a nomination for “Best Supporting Actress” for her performance in last year’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” in 2023.
“The Academy’s Board of Governors is thrilled to honor four trailblazers who have transformed the film industry and inspired generations of filmmakers and movie fans. Across her decades-long career, Angela Bassett has continued to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting.” said Academy President Janet Yang in Monday’s release.

Bassett has starred in many other iconic movies such as “Boyz n the Hood,” “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” “Malcolm X,” and “Mission Impossible: Fallout.” She has also portrayed Queen Ramonda in three Marvel films. Her television career has been equally impressive, with appearances in shows like “American Horror Story,” “ER,” and “9-1-1,” among others.
The Governors Awards, where honorary Oscar statuettes are awarded, will be held in Los Angeles on November 18.
In addition to Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton are also set to be honored at the event, and Michelle Statter will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
