Asamoah Gyan announces his retirement

Ghanaian soccer legend Asamoah Gyan has finally confirmed that he has retired from professional football.

The 37-year-old former captain of the Ghana Black Stars, known as Baby Jet, announced his retirement during a press conference at the 30th Afreximbank Annual Meetings held at the Accra International Conference Centre on June 20th, 2023.

Asamoah Gyan Retires: The emotional announcement saw Gyan in tears during his speech as he hugged former Ivorian and Chelsea star Didier Drogba on stage.

Gyan expressed, He said, “I want to take this great opportunity, a stage that is difficult in every footballer’s career, a moment all footballers do not wish, but when nature dawns, that thin voice will keep echoing into the ears… it is time… that voice has been clear in my ears, and I have succumbed to it, it is time. It is time to hand the jersey and boots in glory as I officially retire from active football.”

Asamoah Gyan retires from professional football

Gyan began his professional career in 2003 with Liberty Professionals in Ghana and went on to play for clubs in France, England, Turkey, China, and the United Arab Emirates.

He is regarded as one of the most successful and popular players in Ghana’s football history. With 51 goals in 106 appearances, Gyan holds the record for the most goals scored for the Ghana national team.

He played a significant role in Ghana’s journey to the round of 16 in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the final of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
