James Cameron’s latest epic, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, reaching the milestone 18 days after its release and cementing Disney’s continued dominance in the theatrical marketplace.
According to box office figures, the third installment in the blockbuster franchise has generated $1.083 billion worldwide, including $306 million from North American theaters and $777.1 million internationally. While the pace is slightly slower than previous entries in the series, the film’s performance still places it among the biggest cinematic events of the year.
For comparison, 2022’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” reached $1 billion in just 14 days, while the original 2009 “Avatar” crossed the threshold in 17 days. Both films went on to enjoy extended box office runs, topping charts for seven consecutive weekends and ultimately becoming two of the highest-grossing movies of all time. The first film earned $2.9 billion globally, while its sequel finished with $2.3 billion.
Whether “Avatar: Fire and Ash” can replicate that level of endurance remains uncertain. Industry analysts note that surpassing $2 billion worldwide would once again depend heavily on overseas markets, which were instrumental in the success of the first two films. International audiences delivered $2.1 billion for the original “Avatar” and $1.65 billion for “The Way of Water.”
So far, the film’s strongest overseas markets include China ($138 million), France ($81 million), Germany ($64 million), and South Korea ($44 million)—figures that suggest sustained global interest but leave questions about long-term momentum.
The milestone also marks a major achievement for Disney, making “Fire and Ash” the studio’s third $1 billion release of 2025, following “Lilo & Stitch” and “Zootopia 2.” Notably, none of Disney’s major competitors have released a billion-dollar film since 2023. The studio has now amassed $6.58 billion in global box office revenue this year, its strongest showing since the COVID era, and leads the industry by a margin of at least $2 billion over rival studios.
Narratively, “Avatar: Fire and Ash” follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their family as they confront a powerful new enemy tied to Pandora’s fiery regions. The film marks James Cameron’s fourth movie to cross $1 billion, joining the ranks of “Titanic” and the previous “Avatar” entries.
Cameron, who remains the only filmmaker with three $2 billion blockbusters, has long envisioned a five-film saga set on Pandora. However, the future of the franchise remains open-ended.
“We’re getting ahead of ourselves [with ‘Avatar 4’] because, first of all, we’ve got to make some money with this one,” Cameron told Variety ahead of the film’s opening weekend. “Every time we go out, we have to prove this crazy business-case yet again.”
For now, “Avatar: Fire and Ash” continues to burn bright at the global box office, with its ultimate ceiling still very much in play.
